Jessica Newstrom begins her second year as the Head Women's Hockey Coach in 2018-2019.
"I'm extremely honored to be a part of Chatham University and grateful for the opportunity to take over the leadership of our Women's Hockey Program. I'm very excited about entering into the new UCHC Conference. I believe it's going to be a great opportunity to be a competitive team in the conference right off the bat, and compete for a conference championship in the near future. I want to make it a priority that our student-athletes be leaders on the ice, in the classroom, and within the community," Newstrom said.
Newstrom most recently served as the Assistant Hockey coach for the women's team at NCAA Division III Utica College for two seasons (2015-16, 2016-17). She assisted with day-to-day operations of the program including running off-ice training, study hall monitoring, recruiting potential student-athletes, fundraising, and game and practice preparation. Newstrom was very involved in the recruitment process initiating and keeping contact with recruits, where she was able to build lasting meaningful relationships with the potential student-athletes. As well as recruiting she was actively involved in away game travel managing all aspects of that.
While at Utica she coached the best season in program history with a record of 19-8-1, making it to the conference championship game. The team included one All-American, two All-Rookie team players, five All-Conference Honorees, and the goaltender now holds the shutout record of 13 and the shutout streak of six.
Prior to her time at Utica, she was the assistant ice hockey coach at Centennial High School for two years as well as a goalie instructor at Premier Goaltending Development. While working for both organizations she developed and coached many athletes that went on to play Division I, Division III and professional hockey.
Jessica graduated from Bethel University with a BA in Physical Education and a minor in Health Education. During her time at Bethel she was a two-time Collegiate All-Conference athlete.
Athletic Director
Leonard Trevino remarked, "Coach Newstrom is a great fit for Chatham. Her national recruiting ties and experience with top hockey programs has prepared her to take over the reins of our program. We are confident with her at the helm and excited for the future of our women's hockey program."
