PITTSBURGH, Pa. - On Wednesday, the Cougars (7-3, 2-1 PAC) took on the Westminster Titans (6-6, 1-3 PAC). The Cougars fell behind early after a disallowed goal before storming back for the 12-5 win.
The Cougars got the game started offensively, or so they thought, when
Brady Rigdon scored. After a brief discussion the referees disallowed the goal for a crease violation. The Titans then added two goals to build an early lead. The Cougars answered back with a pair of their own to end the quarter.
Jacob Lubawy scored his 12th of the season with just over a minute to play in the quarter. That was followed by a chaotic final goal, where
James Cipollone caught a full field throw from the Titans goalie, threw it all the way back and
Brady Rigdon caught it on the bounce and found
Adam Rinker who found the back of the net just before the end of the quarter.
The Cougars kept the momentum through into the second quarter, where they scored six goals to build a large lead at half. Whitaker scored four goals in the quarter, extending his hat trick streak.
Broden Zumbano and
Luke Iovino each netted a goal as well as the Cougars led 8-3 at half.
In the third quarter the Titans scored a goal on each side of the Cougars two goals in the frame.
Broden Zumbano scored his second goal of the day and
Thomas Whitaker scored his fifth goal of the day, 40th of the season. That gave the Cougars a 10-5 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Cougars scored two more goals to put the game out of reach.
Jacob Lubawy and
Michael Flynn each added a goal in the frame for the Cougars.
The Cougars were led offensively by
Thomas Whitaker's six points (5G 1A).
Brady Rigdon (4A) and
Jacob Lubawy (2G 1A) each also broke the three point mark.
Jack Neal had a team high eight ground balls and along with
Jesse Corser-James recorded team highs in caused turnovers with four. Corser-James now has 32 caused turnovers on the season just four away from tying his single season record set last season.
Cody Randal went 13 of 19 on face offs.
James Cipollone picked up his seventh win of the season, making 13 saves and recording a .722 save rate.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday April 4th when they travel to Meadville, PA for a match up with Allegheny.
