Bamford Makes History in Baseball's Sweep of Wentworth

DAVENPORT, Fl. – Chatham Baseball (6-1, 0-0 PAC) used two strong starting pitching performances to defeat Wentworth (0-2, 0-0) in both games of their doubleheader on Sunday morning by final scores of 6-1 and 4-1.

Dominic Obiecunas started the scoring in game one with an RBI ground-rule double in the second inning. Cooper Baxter brought Obiecunas home with a double, then Baxter would score on a Devin Fluhmann double. The Cougars would score all 6 of their runs in that second inning, as Fluhmann scored on an error and Eddie Rueda tripled in a run before scoring on a passed ball. The Leopards would score just a single run in the third inning to give Chatham a 5-run victory.

Matt Bamford was outstanding on the mound, going all seven innings and allowing just an earned run on two hits. The senior set the program record with 13 strikeouts in the game, breaking the previous mark of 10. Bamford struck out half of the batters he faced and walked two. Eddie Rueda went 3-4 with an RBI and scored a run at the plate for the Cougars. Nolan Boehm was 1-2 with a run scored and 2 walks. Obiecunas, Baxter, and Fluhmann all had a run, hit and RBI in the contest.

Chatham got on the board early again in game two, with Nolan Boehm and Baxter driving in runs via sacrifice flies in the bottom of the first inning. Angelo DeLeonardis capped off the Cougars' scoring in the opening frame when he came home on a throwing error after stealing third. Zane Pollack had Chatham's third RBI sacrifice fly of the game in the second inning, and the Cougars would again hold Wentworth to just a run in the game to win by 3.

Gianni Cantini earned the win for Chatham, pitching 5 innings while allowing 1 earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Ethan Botkin and Baxter completed the game with two perfect innings, and Baxter picked up the save for his work in the seventh.
