Women's Basketball Gets Road Win over Wolverines to Advance to PAC Semifinal

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Chatham Women's Basketball (18-8, 10-6 PAC) mounted a fourth-quarter comeback on Tuesday night to knock off #1 Grove City (17-9, 11-5) 57-50 and advance to the PAC Semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.

Senior Madison Nereu was dominant for the Cougars, tallying 16 points on 6-11 shooting, 8 rebounds, a career-high 6 steals and 3 assists. Senior Hannah Chenault netted 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double. Senior Alyssa Laukus also recorded a double-double, her first of the season, contributing 12 points on 5-9 shooting with 3 blocks and a season-high 10 boards. Junior Hannah Stephanites shot 3-5 for Chatham off the bench and scored 8 points, and senior Maria Barela dished out a game-high 7 assists for the Cougars.

Emily Venick scored 5 first-quarter points for Chatham, and her three-point basket four minutes into the game gave the Cougars a 9-4 lead. The Wolverines would score the only 2 points in the remainder of the quarter, but Chatham would stay ahead as Nereu's jumper with just over three minutes left in the half made the score 16-10 Cougars. Grove City would show why they are a #1 seed, however, by knocking down four three-point baskets in the final three minutes of the second quarter. A triple that just beat the halftime buzzer put the Wolverines up by 4 at the intermission.

Grove City's run extended to 21-4, and Chatham did not score a point in the first five minutes of the half. But Hannah Stephanites came through with two three-point baskets, and a 12-3 Cougars scoring run brought them within 2 points. The Wolverines entered the fourth quarter with a 37-34 advantage, but Hannah Chenault decided she would not be playing her final game in a Chatham uniform. Her three-pointer with eight minutes remaining evened the score at 40, then with five minutes to play, her jumper gave the Cougars their first lead in the second half at 44-42. Chenault would score 10 points in the final quarter, and her basket with just under two minutes on the clock put Chatham up by 7  and all but sealed the quarterfinal victory.

The Cougars shot 57, 1 percent (8-14) in the fourth quarter and 38.6 percent (22-57) from the field for the game. They held Grove City to just 27 percent (17-63) from the field for the game.

In the PAC Semifinal round, Women's Basketball will visit W&J, the number two seed out of the PAC South, in a rematch of the 2024-25 PAC Championship game on Thursday at 6 p.m.
