Women's Basketball Suffers First Home Defeat

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Chatham Women's Basketball (12-5, 5-4 PAC) was defeated at the Athletic & Fitness Center for the first time in 2025-26 by Washington & Jefferson (13-5, 8-1) on Wednesday night by a final score of 64-52.

Riley DeRubbo scored 17 points with 7 rebounds and 3 assists for the Presidents. Katie Kovalchick had 14 points and 9 boards for W&J. Stellanie Loutsion netted 12 points with 6 rebounds and 3 steals, and Marina Grado recorded a game-high 8 assists.

Senior Madison Nereu was the Cougars' leading scorer with 15 points, completing her 10th double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. Senior Maria Barela netted 10 points, and senior Alyssa Laukus had 8 points with a team-high 5 assists for Chatham.

The Cougars held an early 5-0 lead after a Hannah Chenault triple and Jordyn Jensen layup, but the Presidents responded with an 11-0 run. Layups by Barela and Nereu closed out Chatham's first-quarter scoring, with the Cougars trailing 19-15. Julia Calvin's three-point basket brought Chatham within 3 early in the second quarter, but a 12-2 W&J scoring run gave them control of the game, taking an 11-point advantage into the locker room.

The Presidents added to their lead in the third quarter, and they led 49-30 with 14 minutes left to play. The Cougars would open the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run of their own that included three-pointers from Chenault and Barela and got Chatham within 54-46. That was as close as they would make it, however, and W&J held on for the 12-point victory to sweep the regular season series.

The Presidents shot 36.2 percent (21-58) across the game, including 46.4 percent (13-28) in the first half. The Cougars shot 32.8 percent (20-61) from the field in the contest.

Women's Basketball will look to bounce back on Saturday at Westminster, with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
