Baseball Taken Down by Tomcats

PITTSBURGH – Chatham Baseball (14-18, 6-8 PAC) dropped two high-scoring contests to Thiel (12-19, 8-6) on Friday at West Field by final scores of 12-7 and 10-9.

The Tomcats jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in game one after a 3-run fourth inning. The bottom of the fourth contained most of the Cougars' scoring in the afternoon tilt, as Chatham pulled within 5-4 on an Angelo DeLeonardis RBI single followed by an Eddie Rueda triple that plated three Cougars. Still in the fourth, Peter Tadic singled in Rueda before Cooper Baxter tripled to give Chatham a 6-5 lead. In the fifth, Thiel tied the game back up in the top half, then the Cougars went up 7-6 when Devin Fluhmann scored on a wild pitch. The Chatham offense would be stymied the rest of the way, and the Tomcats scored 6 unanswered runs to grab the victory.

Peter Tadic was 3-5 with an RBI, walk, and run scored at the plate in game one. Eddie Rueda went 2-5 with 3 RBIs and scored a run. Devin Fluhmann was 2-3 with 2 walks and scored twice.

Game two again started in favor of Thiel, as they scored a run in each of the first two innings. Chatham equalized in the fourth on RBI base hits from Cooper Baxter and Tyler Cote. After the Tomcats put up 2 more runs in the fifth, Tadic's ground out scored Bredl in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Cougar deficit to one. The teams combined for 7 runs in the sixth. Thiel built its lead to 7-3, then an error allowed Cote to score, DeLeonardis singled in Fluhmann, and Peter Tadic was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to even the score. The Tomcat offense continued to produce with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth. In the ninth, Bredl's base hit scored Fluhmann to make it a 10-8 ballgame. Eddie Rueda's pop fly with two outs then found the outfield grass and scored Ty Blackburn, but DeLeonardis was cut down at the plate on the play to end the game.

Tadic was 1-4 with 2 RBIs and scored in game two. Devin Fluhmann went 1-3, scored twice and walked twice for Chatham. Tyler Cote finished the game 2-5 with an RBI and scored.

The Cougars will head to Waynesburg on Wednesday for two conference matchups beginning at 1 p.m.
