WASHINGTON, Pa. – Chatham Women's Basketball (21-6, 17-3) suffered a 59-50 loss to the W&J Presidents (23-4, 18-2) in the PAC Final at Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Saturday. With the loss, the Cougars' season concludes.
Madison Nereu led the way for Chatham with a double-double, scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds.
Charjae Brock added 12 points, with eight coming in the second half.
Hannah Chenault netted seven points, while
Ashlie Louden and
Zeli Rodriguez each scored five.
W&J scored the first five points of the game in the opening 40 seconds before the Cougars responded with a layup from Nereu and a quick steal and layup from Brock to make it 5-4. Nereu then gave the Cougars the lead with another layup, but the Presidents responded with a triple to go back on top. The home side closed the first quarter with a 16-3 run to go up 24-11. The Presidents knocked down six three-pointers in the opening frame.
After Chatham got the opening basket of the second quarter from Brock, the Presidents put together another run of 7-0 to increase their lead to 31-13. However, the Cougars responded with a 10-2 run to close the half, which cut the lead to 33-23.
W&J opened the second half scoring with a layup, but Chatham stormed back with a 14-0 swing to take a 37-35 lead. Brock provided eight points on the run, while Chenault scored four. The game of runs continued with the Presidents building an 8-0 run that started in the final minute of the third quarter and stretched into the fourth. The hosts found themselves with a 45-39 lead with under eight minutes to play. Four straight points from Nereu then chipped away at the W&J lead. Chatham stayed within striking distance down the stretch but were never able to tie the game back up.
The Cougars shot 35.3% (18-51) from the field but went 3-21 from beyond the arc in the loss. The Presidents shot 36.2% (21-58) from the field and went 8-29 from deep. W&J dominated on the boards 46-27.
