Cougars Fall in Fiery Game to Utica

Pittsburgh, Pa. - On Saturday, the Cougars (7-12-2) played their second game of the weekend against the Utica Pioneers (17-2-2). The Cougars fell by a final score of 6-2 in a game that played a backup role to the penalties late.

In the first period, the Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead as they scored five-and-a-half and twelve minutes into the period. The Cougars answered back before the end of the period as Nick Cyprian scored assisted by Tyler Samodral and Bekk McClaine. That cut the Pioneers lead to 2-1 as the teams headed into the break.

In the second period, the Pioneers added one more goal in a back and forth penalty. An arena malfunction sent the game to the second intermission with 1:29 left in the second period. The end of the second period was played after the intermission and then the teams went into the third period after a couple minute break.

In the third period, the Pioneers added three more goals in the first 12 minutes of the period growing their lead to 6-1. Then the Cougars and Pioneers combined for 22 penalties and 126 penalty minutes in the last 5:03 of the game with both teams taking line pictures in the crowded penalty box. Michael Roby scored a goal with three minutes left in the game assisted by Cyprian and Brock Forrest. The two teams combined for 30 penalties and 142 penalty minutes in the game and the final score was 6-2 in favor of the Pioneers.

The Cougars were led offensively by Cyprian who had one goal and one assist. Defensively, Devin Nabozny, Matt Doyle, True Crowe and Milan Cermak all made two blocks to assist their goalie. Louis Finnegan made 50 saves and recorded a .893 save rate for the game.

The Cougars will be back in action on February 14th when they travel to Purchase, N.Y. to play Manhattanville with a puck drop at 3:30 PM.
