Canton, N.Y. - On Friday, the Cougars (2-13-2) traveled to play a two game set against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos (5-11-2). The Cougars took the early lead but ultimately tied the game 3-3 and won in the shootout.
In the first period, the Cougars got on the board first when
Klara Miuller scored her fourth goal of the season 13 minutes into the game. She was assisted by Olivia McTavcish. That gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead, but that would not last for long though as the Kangaroos scored on the power play to tie the game at 1. That would be the score as the teams headed into the locker room.
In the second, it was Miuller scoring her second goal of the game, this time assisted by
Clarissa Hayes that gave the Cougars the lead heading into the third period. The Kangaroos put 13 shots on goal in the second period but
Samantha Brophy was able to make all the saves and give the Cougars a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
In the third period,
Anabel Lota extended the Cougar lead to 3-1 after she netted a goal less than two minutes into the third period. She was assisted by
Kylie Shannon. The Kangaroos would not go silently however as they scored two straight goals to send the game to overtime tied at three goals a piece.
In overtime neither team could score. The Kangaroos put four shots on goal and the Cougars could only muster one. That ended the game in a tie for the NCAA, however the two teams played the shootout and the Cougars won the five rounds with a score of 2-1.
The Cougars were led offensively by Miuller and Lota.
Rainey Jessup led the Cougars with four blocks to help out her goalie. Brophy recorded 53 saves, not counting the shootout, which gave her a .946 save rate for the game.
The Cougars and Kangaroos will play their second game of the weekend on February 1st in Canton, N.Y. with a 1 PM puck drop.
