Men's Basketball Outlasts Bearcats on the Road

LATROBE, Pa. – Chatham Men's Basketball (12-3, 9-1) earned their fourth consecutive win with a 72-64 win over the Saint Vincent Bearcats (11-4, 7-3) on Saturday night at the Robert S. Carey Center.

Diaun Pinkett led the game with 21 points and added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Zavea Green netted a career-high 15 points on a perfect 7-7 from the field, including a three-pointer. Lovenson Xavier scored 13 points and pulled down eight boards, while Blaine Gartley added seven rebounds, five steals and three assists to his six points.

The two teams combined for eight lead changes in the first 12 minutes of the first half in what was a back-and-forth battle. Saint Vincent took an 11-6 lead after a 6-0 run, but Chatham responded with a 6-1 run, with all six points coming from Green, to tie the game at 12. The Bearcats began to pull away in the final eight minutes with another 6-0 run, but back-to-back threes from Pinkett helped the Cougars bring it back to a one-point game. Chatham regained the lead at 27-26 on a mid-range jumper from Xavier, then a triple from Drew Vizenor made the lead four. Green then connected on a three to give the Cougars their largest lead of the first half at five points, which they took into the halftime break. Green, whose career high was nine points coming into the game, scored 11 points in the first half on 5-5 shooting.

After Saint Vincent scored the opening basket of the second half, Chatham broke away with an 8-2 run led by four points from Xavier, which gave the Cougars a 41-32 advantage at 16:33. After another Bearcat layup, a three-pointer from Pinkett marked the first double-digit lead of the day, making it 44-34. Chatham's lead increased to 12, but Saint Vincent went on a 9-0 run to storm back into the game with under 12 minutes to play. The Cougars were able to mitigate the damage with a dunk from Green and two free throws from Simon Boyer that made it 52-45 at 8:54. The Bearcats used another quick swing to cut it to three, but again, the Cougars brought it back to an 11-point lead, which started with a three-pointer from Xavier with 4:00 left. Down the stretch, Saint Vincent pulled within four thanks to one final run of 7-0 but were unable to complete the comeback.

Chatham shot 43.9% (25-57) from the field, 41.2% (7-17) from deep and 78.9% (15-17) from the free-throw line. Saint Vincent won the board battle 45-36, but shot just 22.2% (4-18) from beyond the arc.

Chatham Men's Basketball will hit the road again Saturday when they visit the Westminster Titans at 3 p.m.
