MUNHALL, Pa. - Baseball opened up PAC play Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Thiel College Tomcats. They were defeated in both games, losing game one 4-3 and game two 5-4.
In game one, the Tomcats put up the first run of the day in the third and another in the fifth to have a 2-0 lead after five innings. The Cougars finally got a run back in the sixth to trim the Thiel lead to one after Sophomore
Angelo DeLeonardis singled and scored Sophomore
Peter Tadic. Things stayed put at 2-1 in favor of the Tomcats until the ninth when they scored two crucial insurance runs to lead 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Cougars answered with two runs of their own, but were unable to push across the tying run as they lost game one 4-3.
Junior
Carter Beneigh went seven strong innings. He gave up five hits, two runs, a walk, and three strikeouts. Tadic and DeLeonardis were both 3-4 in the contest.
In game two, this time it was the Cougars that scored first in the bottom of the first via a wild pitch. Thiel answered in the second to tie the game up at one apiece but then Chatham proceeded to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning. DeLeonardis hit an RBI single in the third to score
Peter Tadic to extend their lead to 4-1. The Cougar bats went silent as Thiel chipped away and scored a run in the fifth and seventh to trim the lead to 4-3 in favor of the Cougars. In the ninth just three outs away from a split, Thiel rallied and scored two runs to give them their first lead of the game. Chatham was unable to score in the bottom half as they were defeated 5-4.
The Cougars collected three hits in game two, one each from Sophomores
Caleb Jones,
Angelo DeLeonardis, and
Tommy Schubert. Sophomore
Nick Martin went 5.2 innings, scattered four hits, gave up two runs, two walks, and had five strikeouts.
Baseball moves to 6-10 (0-2) on the year. Next up is a non-conference matchup on the road at Hiram College on Tuesday at 4 PM.
