Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Golden Eagles

PITTSBURGH - Chatham Men's Lacrosse (4-4) defeated the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles (1-5) by the score of 18-13 on Tuesday at UPMC Graham Field. The Cougars offense put together its second-highest goal total of the season.

Junior Ethan Rinker totaled six points on five goals and one assist to lead the offense. He added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Brady Rigdon also scored five goals in a season-high performance. First year Tanner Marsh recorded a hat trick with three scores and an assist, while sophomore Trent Griffin tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Jacob Lubawy racked up a goal and two assists with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Thomas Curtin had five ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with a goal. Sophomore Brett Zaruba stopped seven shots in net.

The Cougars took their first lead of the day at 12:41 in the first with a goal from Griffin, but the Golden Eagles answered to tie the game just under two minutes later. Brockport took the lead at 7:34, but Griffin scored again to tie the game at 2, and Rigdon gave Chatham a 3-2 lead, which they would not surrender for the rest of the game.

Rinker netted the first goal of the second quarter to grow the Cougars' lead to two. After another goal from the Golden Eagles, Rinker scored again at 11:05 to make it 5-3. Two goals from Rigdon in a 15-second span gave Chatham a four-goal cushion, then Rinker assisted on a score by Marsh and scored his third goal of the quarter just 50 seconds later.

Neither team scored for the first seven minutes of the second half, but then the floodgates opened, specifically for the Golden Eagles as they went on a 5-1 run in a span of 3:26 to pull within two. However, goals from Marsh and Curtin brought the Chatham lead back to four before one final Brockport goal in the last minute closed the third quarter at 12-9.

In the fourth, the Cougars used a 5-1 run, which was capped off by two more goals from Rigdon, to take a seven-goal lead, their largest of the day. The Golden Eagles netted three of the last four goals, but were ultimately shut down by the Cougar defense.

Shots were 49-34 in favor of Chatham. The Cougars won the faceoff battle 18-16 and were 2-6 on extra-man opportunities, while the Golden Eagles were 1-2.

Men's Lacrosse is back at UPMC Graham Field on Saturday to take on Hood College as part of a four-game home stretch.
