Utica, N.Y. - On Saturday, the Cougars (0-5-1) took on the Utica Pioneers (7-1) for the final game of the weekend set. The Cougars late rally fell short as they lost 4-3.
In the first period it was the Pioneers being aggressive in the first period. They scored a pair of goals in the first period and led at the break 2-0. The Pioneers put 18 shots on goal compared to the Cougars three.
In the second period, the Pioneers kept the pressure on the Cougars defense when they scored their third goal of the game to take a 3-0 lead early in the period. That would be the only goal of the second period as both defenses settled in.
In the third period the Cougars stormed back starting with
Kyle Contessa scoring off the assists from
Brendan Merriman and
Zack Conner. The Pioneers would add another goal and take a 4-1 lead on a power play goal. The Cougars would then score their second goal of the period when
Brendan Merriman scored on the
Bekk McClaine assist. Then it was
Nick Babbie scoring on a power play assisted by McClaine and Conner. That made the score 4-3 in favor of the Pioneers. Although the Cougars had shots at the end of the game they could not find the equalizer and lost by that score.
In net for the Cougars was
Louis Finnegan. He made 48 saves on 52 attempts.
Brendan Pomerantz led the Cougars defensively with five blocks.
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday November 26th, when they travel to Fredonia, N.Y. to play Fredonia at 7 PM.
