ERIE, Pa. - Chatham Women's Basketball (2-1) used a 29-point second quarter to take down Penn State Behrend (2-2) by the score of 80-52 at the Junker Center on Saturday afternoon.
Ashlie Louden led the Cougars with 25 points on 7-12, including six three-pointers. She also racked up four steals and three rebounds.
Julia Calvin put up 16 points with four threes of her own to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Charjae Brock netted 13 points on 5-9 shooting and grabbed four steals with three rebounds.
Madison Nereu had eight points with seven boards, while
Dominique Pacheco scored seven on 3-9 shooting.
The Cougars opened the game with two steals on their first two defensive possessions and parlayed that into a 5-0 run with a fastbreak layup from Brock and a three-pointer from Louden. After the Lions responded to pull within one at 7-6, the Cougars got driving layups from Brock and Nereu to regain a five-point lead at 3:43 in the first quarter. The Chatham defense was relentless in the first quarter, getting in passing lanes and knocking balls loose, but the offense was unable to fully capitalize as the Cougars scored just 10 points off of eight turnovers. Chatham led 17-14 after one quarter of play.
The Cougars stretched their lead to seven in the opening minute of the second quarter with baskets from Nereu and Pacheco, but the Lions swung back with a quick run to make it 21-19. Chatham would make another push to pull away with a 7-0 run which featured five straight from Louden. A long two-pointer from
Lauren Keel gave Chatham its first double-digit lead of the day at 3:47 of the second quarter. Then, a triple from Louden followed by another bucket from Keel made it 39-23 in favor of the Cougars. That would eventually turn into a 16-0 Chatham run to close the half, giving the Cougars a 46-23 lead at the break.
After a scoreless three minutes from both teams to start the second half, Brock hit a pair of free throws to put Chatham on the board. After scoring 29 in the second quarter, the Cougars scored just 15 in the third quarter, 10 of which came from Calvin. A series of threes from Pacheco, Brock and Calvin helped Chatham grow the lead to as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.
Chatham shot 49.2% (29-59) from the field and 48.1% (13-27) from long range, while Penn State Behrend shot 33.9% (21-62) from the floor and 18.2% (2-11) from deep. The Cougars recorded 12 steals and forced 20 Lions turnovers. Rebounds were 37 a piece.
Women's Basketball returns to action Wednesday evening at home against Saint Vincent. Prior to the game, last year's PAC championship team will be honored with their ring ceremony pregame.
