Squash Splits Matches in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – Both Chatham Squash teams lost in their first match Saturday to Franklin and Marshall, but bounced back to defeat Haverford and finish the day 1-1.

Men's Squash (2-1) dropped their first match of the day 6-3, with all three wins for Chatham coming via sweeps.  Junior Agustin Carranza (11-6, 11-9, 11-9), junior Abdelrahman Walid Sadek (11-7, 14-2, 11-4), and senior Haidar Jafry (11-9, 11-5, 11-5) held their own against the Diplomats (3-1). Chatham dominated in their second match, defeating Haverford 9-0. Every Cougar that played swept their opponent. Carranza (11-6, 11-6, 11-3), Sadek (11-7, 11-7, 11-8), and Jafry (11-9, 11-3, 11-5) all earned their second sweep of the day. Senior Jared Nalliah (11-7, 11-1, 11-7), senior Lucas Oliveira (11-5, 11-5, 11-2),  junior Muhammad Hassaan Raza (11-9, 11-7, 11-7), junior Alejandro Cruz (11-6, 11-7, 11-9), junior Brett Poles (11-5, 11-5, 11-7) and junior Keyel Christopher Beasley (11-3, 11-3, 11-1) also won 3-0 against the Fords (0-3).

The women's team (1-2) was narrowly defeated 5-4 against Franklin and Marshall (1-2). Junior Vasundhra Vasanthan (11-0, 11-3, 13-11) and sophomore Clara Braga (11-9, 11-1, 11-2) swept their opponents, but a loss by default in the nine-seed matchup was the difference in the scoreline. The Cougars avenged the opening loss by defeating Haverford 6-3 to grab their first victory of the season. Braga (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) held her opponent to just 6 points in the four-seed matchup. Vasanthan (11-5, 12-10, 13-11), junior Basmala Syed Aref (11-9, 11-6, 11-6), junior Sofia Pinto (11-3, 11-7, 11-6), and first year Isabela Campos (15-13, 11-7, 11-9) also swept their Fords (0-3) opponents.

Both teams will cap off the weekend with two matches on Sunday. Drexel (No. 7 in men's, No. 10 in women's) will be the teams' first opponent of the day with a 9 a.m. start time. Squash will complete the five-match opening weekend against Penn (No. 1 men's, No. 3 women's) at 1 p.m.
