PITTSBURGH, Pa. - January 24, 2024 - Chatham Men's Basketball (11-8, 9-5) put together a historic performance at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Wednesday, which resulted in a 123-85 win over the Bethany Bison (7-12, 6-8). The Cougars set new program records for points in a game (123), field goals made (48), field-goal percentage (65.8%), rebounds (52) and assists (32). They also tied the program record with 19 made three-pointers.
Senior wing
Geoffrey Helm led the charge on offense, with a career-high 24 points on 8-11 shooting from deep in addition to three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Graduate forward
Elijah Sutton added 21 points on 9-12 shooting with seven rebounds and four assists. Senior forward
Luca Robinson was 8-9 from the field and netted 19 points. Sophomore guard
Diaun Pinkett scored 13 points and tallied seven rebounds with four steals and three assists. Freshmen
Zavea Green and
Jaden Mitchell were a combined 7-7 from the field, including 3-3 from beyond the arc, and scored nine and eight points, respectively. 14 different Cougars made it onto the scoresheet, including freshman guard
James Schlick, who scored his first career points in the second half.
In a game that seemed to be all Chatham, the Cougars actually started the game in a quick 5-0 hole after a layup and three-pointer from the Bison in the opening minute. The tide quickly turned, with an extended 34-10 Chatham run over the next 10-plus minutes, which included 12 points from Helm. The Cougars would close the half on a 22-2 swing to head into the locker room up by 33. The two offenses would explode for a combined 121 points in the second half, including 10 three-pointers a piece, but Chatham stayed on the gas the whole way. At 5:37 left in the second half, junior forward
Hunter Verling hit a three-pointer to give the Cougars 113 points, breaking the previous program record of 110 points in a game from Jan. 14, 2023 at Franciscan. That three ball also gave Chatham its largest lead of the night at 46.
The Cougars were 19-33 (57.6%) from beyond the arc, while the Bison were 12-37 (32.4%). On the boards, Chatham won 52-34, which is the best rebounding margin in program history (+18).
Men's Basketball will try to follow this record-breaking performance on Saturday when they welcome in the Barons of Franciscan. Saturday is also the Cougars' Alumni Game.
