Morrow Pitches Complete Game, Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - March 28, 2023 - Chatham Baseball split its road doubleheader with Waynesburg on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 6-2 and losing the second game 6-1. Chatham is now 10-8 on the season and 3-1 in the PAC.

The Cougars struck first in the top of the opening frame and didn't even need a hit to do so, as graduate outfielder Nico Cuello walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a balk.

Waynesburg tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third, but Chatham countered with two runs in the following half inning when junior outfielder Dylan Vogel singled to score sophomore catcher Tyler Cote and then scored himself on a passed ball. The Yellow Jackets would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth.

Chatham's lead grew to 4-2 in the top of the sixth after sophomore first baseman Quinn Burke doubled to lead off the innings and then scored on an error. The Cougars then made it 5-2 in the seventh thanks to a double from senior third baseman Brandon Griener that drove in junior infielder Benny Dottle.

The Chatham offense added another in the eight on a single from Dottle that drove in Vogel.

Sophomore righty Dawson Morrow, who started on the bump for the Cougars was highly effective as he earned a complete game and allowed just two runs. He struck out nine batters and retired the Yellow Jackets in order six times. From the fourth to the eighth, Morrow sat down 13 consecutive Yellow Jackets.

Vogel went 2-4 at the plate in game one with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Dottle was 2-5 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base.

In game two, Waynesburg took a 1-0 lead in the first and increased that lead to 4-0 in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets made it 6-0 in the six with two runs, including a solo homer.

The Cougars finally got on the board in the ninth with a double from Burke that scored graduate catcher Caleb Lehman.

Dottle and Burke each went 2-4 in the second game and Lehman doubled in his only at-bat of the day.

Baseball is back on the diamond with a doubleheader Saturday at home against Geneva.
