Men’s Hockey Comes Back in 5-4 Overtime Victory at Stevenson

REISTERSTOWN, MD - January 21, 2023 - Chatham Men's Hockey concluded their regular-season series with Stevenson tonight on the road. After a tough shootout loss after a 4-4 tie last night, the Cougars came back tonight for a 5-4 overtime victory.

The Cougars finished the first period trailing 2-0, but a productive second period would see them pull ahead of the Mustangs.

Three Cougar goals went unanswered to leave the second period at 3-2. The first to score was first-year Nick Cyprian, who was assisted by classmates True Crowe and Michael Hurst.

Within the last two and a half minutes of the period, sophomore Evan Mitchell and junior Carson Grainer had tied and exceeded the score. Mitchell was assisted by senior Andrew Warhoftig while Grainer was set up by Hurst and Mitchell.

The next four goals of the game were all scored on the power-play. Stevenson struck first, only for the Cougars to pull ahead thanks to Caden Smith, Warhoftig, and Cyprian on the power-play.

A Mustang goal late in the third would force overtime, and the period would almost expire before Andrew Warhoftig scored on a one-timer set up by Smith and sophomore Zack Conner.

Warhoftig would be the night's point leader with his game-winning goal and two assists. Mitchell, trailing with two points, also won a team-high 13 face-offs.

Conner led the team in blocks with four to the aid of fifth year goaltender Ricardo Gonzalez, who made 40 saves in the hard-fought victory.

The Cougars now sit at 10-4-2 overall and 9-3-2 in conference play. They will host Buffalo State on Tuesday, January 24th and Fredonia on Friday, January 27th before rounding out their three-game week at Fredonia on Saturday.
