DAVENPORT, Fla. – March 5, 2022 – The Chatham University baseball team is coming home with its best Florida outing since the program's inception after an 11-5 win over Russell Sage. The Cougars are 5-1 after the trip.
After a scoreless first, Chatham scored runs in the next four innings to build a mammoth lead. In the second inning, sophomores
Frankie DeLuca and
Dylan Vogel laced RBI singles to put the Cougars up 2-0. Then first-year
Anthony Sciulli tacked an RBI base hit of his own to put Chatham ahead 3-0 after three.
In the fourth and fifth, the Cougars opened things up. Vogel tripled to bring in the fourth run, a groundout brought home the fifth score, and junior
Brandon Griener doubled to score the sixth, all coming in the fourth inning. Then first-year
Sam Helton blasted a two-run homer, followed by an RBI single by senior
Caleb Lehman, who later scored on a wild pitch to put Chatham ahead 10-0.
Russell Sage would score on a pair of home runs in the top of the sixth, one a three-runner and another a two-run shot, but that would only make a dent in what was a big lead. The Cougars only added one more after a groundout scored the final tally.
Chatham had another splendid day swinging the sticks, smacking 13 base hits, four by Vogel. Helton added three base hits and Griener provided a pair.
First-year
Tyler Cote started and got the win in 5.0 shutout innings, striking out nine batters. Classmate
Dawson Morrow went 0.2 innings and was relieved by senior
Mason Akers, who fanned four batters in 3.1 innings of work.
Chatham opens its home slate on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 against Medaille in a non-conference doubleheader.
