Baseball Earns Third Straight Win Against Widener

DAVENPORT, Fla. - March 2, 2022 - Chatham Baseball faced Widener University this morning as they continue their spring break play at the RussMatt Invitational. Against a talented Widener squad, the Cougars rolled to a 5-3 victory.

First-year Tyler Cote would warm up the base path in the second inning with a solo home run to give Chatham the lead.

Following Cote was classmate Quinn Burke, who would crush an outfield double to drive in junior Brandon Griener, who reached on his own single.

The fifth inning would remain scoreless for both teams, but sophomore Frankie DeLuca would extend the Cougars' lead further in the sixth. With Griener (walk), Cote (walk), and Burke (intentional walk) on base, DeLuca would hit a gap-shot single to drive in both Griener and Cote for a 4-0 lead.

Widener's Costanzo would homer twice, taking responsibility for all three of the Pride's runs in the process. However, in the top of the ninth, Griener helped the Cougars to one more insurance run, sending sophomore Dylan Vogel home.

On the mound, Ryan Denz (6 IP) would take the win while Mason Akers was credited with a save (3 IP). The two faced a combined 34 batters.

Brandon Griener led the Cougars in hits with three and tied for a team-high two runs with Tyler Cote.

The team now stands at 3-0 with three games remaining in the tournament. The Cougars' next opponent is Elms on Friday, followed by Russell Sage Saturday morning.
