Men's Basketball Upset at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – February 19, 2022 – The Chatham University men's basketball team took the trip west to Steubenville for a rematch with Franciscan on Saturday evening and fell to the Barons 87-83. The loss finishes Chatham's regular season at 19-4 overall and 14-4 in PAC action.

The game began as a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading baskets early. While the Cougars took a lead of 13-9 seven minutes in, the largest of the day, Franciscan found ways to take a 41-38 halftime lead over the Cougars.

In the second half, the Barons found form and went on a 7-0 run to start out, leading by double digits just under two minutes into the half. Both teams traded leads, but the Barons would not go away. Chatham's last lead came just 2:13 remaining in the game before Franciscan came storming back.

The Cougars had a chance late in the game down by two to either tie or take the lead, but a steal led to a forced Chatham foul, two free throws, and desperation heaves to no avail in the waning seconds. Chatham shot just under 41% for the game but was outrebounded 44-34 in defeat. The Cougars got 27 points off the bench and 42 points in the paint.

Chatham's leading scorer was junior Marcos Cintron at 22 points. Sophomore Simon Boyer also chipped in 20 with a pair of assists. Seniors Ben Pollock and Nick Fiumara also finished in double-figures with 18 and 13, respectively. Senior Nick Bomar nearly had a double double despite not scoring a point, pulling in 13 rebounds with swiping nine steals, a single game individual record in the latter category.
