Chlorine Cougars Swim Away with Convincing Sweep of Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – January 22, 2021 – The Chatham men's and women's swimming teams conquered the Bethany Bison in dominant fashion Saturday afternoon, sweeping the hosts 151-25 for the women and 85-43 for the men. The women improve to 4-3 overall while the men are 1-6. The men won every event that they competed in while the women also dominated with at least one Cougar claiming first in virtually every event.
 
In competition against the Bison, the women began with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke. Chatham placed in first and second, respectively, with first-year Amy Jarvis winning at 1:09.27 and classmate Lexi Ray coming in second at 1:21.87. Senior Charity Fannie won the 50-yard freestyle at 29.63 while first-year Cassidy Kinney came in second at 33.66.
 
Moving to the 100-yard freestyle, two more Cougars placed in first and second with relative ease. First-year Maddy Cisco (59.10) and sophomore Abigail Glasspool (1:02.36) were those recipients. Junior Carlee Shreve (5:54.15) and first-year Natalia Alardin (6:39.08) also took first and second in the 500-yard freestyle. Finally, the 200-yard freestyle relay was once again dominated by the Cougars. Cisco, Glasspool, Jarvis and sophomore Rachel Lloyd won the event at 1:54.31.
 
All four men's swimmers that competed Saturday got wins. The men began with a 200-yard medley relay victory at 3:00.00 with the combination of first-year Hunter Holcomb, sophomores Avery Filey and Karl Gangloff along with junior Nathan Kerchensky. Gangloff and Kerchensky also won the 200-yard freestyle at 1:54.90 and 2:02.06, respectively and Holcomb won the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:12.19.
 
Kerchensky claimed the 100-yard freestyle at 56.26 and Filey had the 200-yard backstroke victory at 2:17.86. Holcomb continued his winning ways in the 200-yard breaststroke with a convincing victory at 2:35.93. Gangloff also carried his success over into the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:05.45 win. Rounding out the event was a 200-yard freestyle relay victory for Filey, Kerchensky, Holcomb and Gangloff.
 
Next week is the PAC tune-up at Grove City College, which begins at 1:00 on Saturday, January 29.
