Cougars Fall Short in 2OT Battle at Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio - September 25, 2021 - Chatham Men's Soccer traveled to Marietta College this evening for a non-conference matchup. After 108 minutes and the score tied at one, Marietta would claim the decision goal to send Chatham home with an overtime loss.

Though the Pioneers had possession from the kickoff, the Cougars were quick to shut them down with tight defense. First-year goalkeeper Trevor Rose made nine saves in the first half alone, and was aided by several team saves from junior Gunnar Graham, first-year Stephen Comeaux, sophomore Bryce Phillips, and senior Franco Ibanez.

Ibanez proved his worth as a two-way player in the first, scoring an upper right rebound goal off of first-year Xander Pinto's original shot.

Down by one at home, Marietta came out strong in the second half. However, the Pioneers were unsuccessful in the face of Rose, who made several big saves from in tight.

The Cougars had several scoring chances themselves but came up empty against Marietta's battened-down defense.

With under 20 minutes remaining in the second half, Marietta would even the score off of a redirected free kick. Similar opportunities followed for Marietta, but were turned away by Rose in the final minutes of regulation.

Both keepers held strong in the first overtime, turning away several shots each. The Cougars continued to battle late into the second overtime, but a lucky shot by the Pioneers ended the game at the 108 minute mark.

Nine Chatham shots on goal were provided by Ibanez, sophomore Pascal Despinos, juniors Emmet Taub and Gunnar Graham, and senior Ryan Tahbaz.

Rose finished the night with 17 saves in goal.

The Cougars return to Graham on Wednesday, September 29th at 7 PM for their first conference matchup against Bethany.
