WASHINGTON, Pa. - May 6, 2021 - Chatham Softball, seeded sixth, played against fifth-seeded Grove City today at host school Washington and Jefferson College in the first day of the PAC Championship Tournament. The Wolverines got ahead early and kept their lead, defeating the Cougars 6-1.
Grove City's back-to-back single-run innings were followed by four runs in the fourth. Chatham would not score until the fifth inning when senior Kelsey Benjamin knocked a sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring graduate student Paige Shaftic who had reached on a bunt.
The Cougars would rally with two outs in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs to close the gap to 7-5. Lauren McNany started the rally, scoring Mackenzie Dunn. Senior Caitlin Worwood would single next, driving in Lauren Haak. Alyssa Hoffman would end up being the RBI leader for the day with her two-RBI single that brought the Cougars' run total to five.
Paige Shaftic and Lauren McNany led the Cougars in hits with three apiece. Kelsey Benjamin had the first RBI as well as the Cougars' only double of the day. Chatham finished the game with 13 hits.
The Cougars finished the season with a 8-10 conference record to secure the number six spot in their first playoff berth in program history.
