Fast Start Catapults Volleyball to Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – March 16, 2021 – After the disappointing defeat on Tuesday, the Chatham volleyball team rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Thiel on Friday night at the Athletic and Fitness Center (25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20). The win puts Chatham at 3-2 on the season, 2-2 in PAC play.

Chatham got out to a fast start in the first set, scoring five consecutive points after an attacking gaffe to begin the match. The Cougars and Tomcats traded blows until the latter of which got to within one. Chatham ripped off six straight points to help secure the first set win 25-15. It was the Cougars' best hitting performance of the match, hitting at a .333% clip.

The second set saw Chatham claw back a couple of times against the visitors. Thiel scored five of the first six points of the second set, but the Cougars rattled off another six straight to take the lead. Both teams went back and forth again, with the Tomcats marching on a 7-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. However, with the score tied at 22, a pair of kills from graduate Macy King and junior Emily Richie along with a Thiel attacking error notched the 2-0 lead for the Cougars.

The third set started well for the Cougars, but they fell behind for good at 11-10 in the set. Thiel marched to the tune of another 6-0 run to go up by eight, an insurmountable lead for the visitors despite Chatham slicing the deficit to three. The Cougars hit in the negative figures at -.022%.

After the dismal third set, Chatham went right back to work in the fourth. Chatham didn't hit quite as well as it did in the first set, but at .282 the Cougars got back to form. This was aided by a 7-2 run late in the set. Freshman Lona Bailey ended the match with a kill.

Chatham led Thiel in all but one category. This included 51-37 in kills and 48-36 in assists. The Cougars also amassed eight aces, all recorded by four players apiece in the form of Richie, Bailey, junior Makenah Zitko and freshman Meghan Dominek.

Richie had one of her best performances in a Cougar uniform. She finished with 20 kills and 10 digs, just two kills off from her career high and her second collegiate 20+ kill showing. Bailey also was in double figures in kills and digs with 11 and 13, respectively. Sophomore Shaelah Pepperman handed out a career-best 38 assists and also had 10 digs. Dominek notched a game-high 23 digs, while King and sophomore Sydney Dailey both had a pair of blocks.

Chatham hits the road on Thursday, March 25 at Geneva College with a 6:00 start time.
