Chatham Bounces Back, Dominates on Road

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – February 25, 2021 – After a disappointing showing two days prior, the Chatham women's basketball team rebounded with a commanding 70-44 victory at Waynesburg on Thursday night. The Cougars improved their record to 2-4 with the 26-point triumph.

While the offense was able to bounce back, the outstanding defense from Monday carried over to Greene County. The Cougars held Waynesburg to just under 23% shooting from the field, with the Yellow Jackets converting just 15 shots all game.

Chatham asserted dominance right away, scoring 11 of the game's first 13 points, doubling up on Waynesburg in the first quarter and leading by double digits for the majority of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive clinic for the Cougars. Chatham held Waynesburg to 14% shooting in the second. Two of the three buckets knocked down by Waynesburg were three's, the only two trey's all game for the Yellow Jackets. At halftime, Chatham led by 16 points.

After a seesaw third quarter that saw Chatham narrowly edge Waynesburg, the Cougars got hot from the field. Chatham hit two-thirds of its shots from the floor in a 24-point outburst to put the Yellow Jackets away for good.

Despite committing more turnovers than Waynesburg, Chatham led in virtually every category. It out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 53-42, got 23 bench points for a Chatham squad that saw 15 players participate, and nearly doubled-up on second chance points.

Chatham's leading scorer was junior Kaitlyn Fertig, who scored a game-high 20 points and four assists. Graduate Maddy Grennes chipped in a baker's dozen. For the third consecutive game, two Cougars recorded double-digit rebounds. Senior Brittani Smith was one point away from her third straight double-double with nine points and 10 boards, and junior Aliyah Labriola pulled in 12 rebounds.

Chatham returns home for senior night this Saturday, February 27 against Westminster. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. from the Athletics and Fitness Center.
