PITTSBURGH, Pa. - November 16, 2021 - Chatham Women's Basketball hosted Thiel today tonight in their first PAC matchup of the season. The Cougars dominated all game long, finishing Thiel off with a score of 73-31.
The Cougars did not waste any time in getting the scoring started, as graduates Maddy Grennes, Julianna Skowron, and Brittani Smith combined for the team's first six points. First-years Keegan McConahy, Aurielle Brunner, and Emily Durkee would chime in shortly after, thanks to heads plays by classmate Zelimar Rodriguez. Chatham would finish the first quarter with a 15-point lead, limiting the Tomcats to just two points.
Senior Aliyah Labriola came in hot early in the second, accumulating six points in under three minutes. Skowron and Grennes continued to pour it on the Thiel defense, supplemented by free throws and jumpers from McConahy and junior Sierra McClain.
After half and up by 25, the Cougars would turn their attention to defense as Thiel had an aggressive start. The Cougars would still score 12 more points to keep the lead at 26.
The Cougars would net a game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, featuring several good plays from Brunner, Skowron, Rodriguez, McConahy and Smith. Off the bench, Nicole Mellinger would go for three with an assist to Hailey Morris.
Skowron was the point leader of the night with 13, followed by McConahy with 12 and Smith with 11. Labriola, Brunner, and Rodriguez would each add eight more. Durkee successfully quarterbacked a number of plays for a team-high eight assists. Rodriguez and Skowron combined for 12 rebounds.
The Cougars now improve to 4-0 overall with their next contest scheduled for November 23rd at Mount Aloysius.
