Box Score AURORA, Ill. - October 29th, 2021 - Chatham Women's Hockey traveled to Aurora University in Illinois for their season-opening series against the Spartans. Despite a scoreless first period for both teams, the Cougars fell to the Spartans 3-0.
Both teams had ample scoring opportunities in the first period, with the Cougars registering 10 shots on goal. In the Chatham defensive end, senior goaltender Katy Reed would turn 17 Spartan shots away.
Aurora would break the scoreless spell with seven minutes left in the second period and once more just before the buzzer, the latter of which was due to an extra Spartan joining the play on a delayed penalty. The Spartans outshot the Cougars 24-5 in the second period.
Chatham would match Aurora's 11 shots in the third period, but the lone goal would go to the home team.
Sophomore Allison Corser-James led the Cougar offense with six shots on goal, followed by classmates Kaylynn Savoy and Cameron Carmody with four each.
In the circle, Carmody won 14 face-offs. Junior Brooke Almond added another ten face-off wins, as well as a game-high four blocks. Defensemen Samantha Barrett, Ariel Garbin, Roxee Hughes, and Dena Akers also contributed to Chatham's 13 blocks.
Katy Reed had a busy night in net, making 49 saves in her senior debut.
The Cougars get another crack at the Spartans tomorrow night at 7 PM in Aurora.
