WASHINGTON, Pa. - Feb. 26, 2020 - The Cougars (15-10, 7-9) traveled to Washington, Pa. to face the President's of Washington and Jefferson (16-9, 11-5) in the quarterfinals round of the PAC Championship Tournament. Chatham recently defeated Geneva at home 69-63 in the first round of the PAC playoffs on Monday.
The two opponents traded baskets within the first few minutes of the opening quarter, with Washington and Jefferson taking an early lead 13-5. The Cougars would fight their way back into the game, trailing by four after sophomore Sierra Short scored a layup. The President's found themselves on top of the Cougars 15-11 heading into the second.
Chatham would fight their way back into the contest, cutting the lead to as little as one as graduate student Emily Ondo scored a fast break jump shot. Minutes later, Washington and Jefferson would extend their lead to nine with less than two minutes remaining until the break. The Cougars found themselves down eight heading into the half, 32-24.
The Cougars came out swinging to start the second half, going on a 7-0 run to pull within one of the President's, all seven points scored by sophomore Katie Fertig. Washington and Jefferson would answer with a run of their own to stretch their lead to as many as 10 in the quarter. They would hold a 45-35 lead over Chatham going into the final quarter of the match.
Things would get interesting in the fourth quarter, as the Cougar's would cut their lead to nine with under seven minutes to play after a pair of free throws by Fertig. The President's held on to the lead for the rest of the fourth quarter, coming out on top 65-55 over the Cougars to secure their spot in the semifinals round of the PAC Championship Tournament.
Fertig finished with a team high 24 points and went a perfect four for four from the free throw line. Ondo pitched in 15 points herself and grabbed 13 rebounds.
