Cougars Fall Short in Home Opener

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2017 – The Chatham Cougars fell short of a win in their home opener against Case Western Reserve. The team, who graduated just one senior last year, came out stronger than ever and put up a great fight against the Spartans.

How it happened
  • The Cougars started strong against the Spartans controlling the ball in the first half.
  • Sophomore Victoria Vernail (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) scored the first goal of the game at 14:21 with an assist from senior Megan Sieg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic).
  • Chatham took nine shots in the first 45 minutes compared to Case Western's two.
  • The second half saw a Spartan goal at 60:41, followed by another one at 83:41.
  • The Cougars played a physical game with eight fouls.
  • The seven Chatham shots in the final 45 minutes weren't enough to tie the game.
 
In the goal
  • First Year Ashley Bergman (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) was in the net for the Cougars. She faced six shots on goal and made four saves.
  • A strong Chatham defensive line allowed for just two shots in the first half.
 
Up next
  • This match marked the first game of the 2017 season for the Cougars. Up next, they travel to New Concord, Ohio to take on Muskingum Sunday, September 3rd at 4 pm.

Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA is a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and offers nine Division III women's sports and seven men's sports. The athletic program is housed on Chatham's historic and beautiful Shadyside Campus in the $18 million, 74,000 square foot Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC). Women's sports at Chatham include basketball, cross country, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track & field, and volleyball. Chatham will add women's lacrosse beginning play in 2017-2018. Chatham has added five men's sports competing this academic year: baseball, basketball, cross country, swimming & diving, track & field. Chatham will add two more men's varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse.
