Women’s Hockey Defeats Leb Val 6-1 in Season Opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Nov. 3, 2017 – The Chatham University women's hockey team enjoyed a 6-1 season-opening victory over visiting Lebanon Valley in the first game of the Commonwealth Cup on Friday afternoon.

RECORDS: The Cougars move to 1-0-0 and will face the winner of King's and Neumann in tomorrow's championship game at 4:30 pm. The Dutchwomen fall to 0-2-1 on the year and face the loser of King's/Neumann in the third-place game tomorrow at 1 pm.

FIRST CAREER WIN: First-year head coach Jessica Newstrom enjoyed her collegiate coaching win on Friday.

SCORING SUMMARY: Chatham tallied two goals in the first and four in the third.

Senior forward Cassidy Colhoun (Kincardine, Ontario/Saugen-Mailland Lightning) and junior forward Kristina Block (Scarborough, Maine/Barrie Sharks) both tallied two goals.

Senior defender Kassandra Petersen (Faribault, Minn./Minnesota Blades) and junior defender Emma McFarlane (Ottawa, Ontario/Perth Predators) enjoyed a goal each.

SHOT LEADER: The Cougars outshot Lebanon Valley 51-14, led by Petersen who fired off 12 shots.

SAVES: Senior netminder Sydney Isbell (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens) made 13 saves for the Cougars.

FACEOFFS: The Cougars won 37 of 51 faceoff attempts, led by 17 wins from first-year forward Madison Black (Wexford, Pa./Pens Elite).

Chatham added two more men's varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse, as well as men's squash, starting in 2018-19.
