PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Nov. 21, 2017 – Trailing 4-3 in the waning seconds of regulation, the Chatham University men's hockey team tied Tuesday night's game with Morrisville State and forced a 4-4 overtime draw at Frozen Pond Arena in non-conference play.
RECORDS: With the tie, the Cougars are now 0-5-2 while the Mustangs move to 1-5-3 on the year.
WHAT'S NEXT: Chatham is idle over the Thanksgiving holiday and will travel to UCHC opponent Elmira on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 pm.
SCORING SUMMARY: The Mustangs scored just 11 seconds into the game to put the Cougars in a 1-0 hole before first-year defenseman
Jake Reed (Chatham, Ont./Soo Thunderbirds) took a feed from first-year forward
Chris Lutz (Curtice, Ont./Soo Eagles) for the equalizer at 2:38.
Morrisville State enjoyed a short-handed goal in the second period to go ahead 2-1 before first-year defenseman
Andrew Breda (Maple, Ont./St. Michaels Buzzers) found the back of the net on the power play, thanks to assists from first-year forwards
Eric Hildebrand (Robbinsville, N.J./East Coast Wizards) and
Chad Bell (Port McNeill, B.C./Nanaimo Buccaneers), to tie the contest at 2-2.
In the third, first-year forward
Cory King (Albuquerque, N.M./Oklahoma City Blazers) gave the Cougars their first lead of the night off an assist from sophomore forward
Jace Burton (Aurora, Ill./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers), just 1:50 into the period.
However, the Mustangs scored the next two, including a penalty shot with less than two minutes to play, to take a 4-3 lead.
Pulling the goalie and playing with an extra attacker, the strategy came through for Chatham as first-year forward
Daniel Cangelosi (Rockaway, N.J./New England Wolves) put the puck over the line with just 20 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime session.
GOALTENDING: First-year netminder
Matt Calas (Mississauga, Ont./Ancaster Avalanche) made 38 stops for Chatham, including 18 saves in the second period alone.
FACEOFFS: Burton won a team-high 15 draws for the Cougars.
