Cougars Defeat Lions

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa - SEPTEMBER 21st, 2016 – The Chatham Cougars defeated the Penn State Altoona Lions this afternoon 4-1.
 
The Basics
  • Records: Chatham (5-1-1 overall) Penn State Altoona (3-4 overall)
  • Location: Varsity Field at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa.   
 
On the field
  • Not even two minutes in, Chatham scored their first of four goals. Sophomore Julie Bruening (Madison, Ohio/Madison HS) took a shot from outside the box after a pass from Junior Megan Sieg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic HS).
  • The Cougars started off strong getting two consecutive corner kicks within five minutes after the first goal. The Cougar pressure was on! 
  • Bruening would make the second goal for the Cougars just before halftime with an assist from First Year Tina Lett (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland). Bruening now has four goals this season.
  • Senior Skylar Benjamin (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville HS) had the third goal, unassisted, 25 minutes into the second half.
  • Benjamin scored her second goal less than ten minutes later. Sophomore Kassianna Politis (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township HS) was credited with the assist.
  • Chatham outshot Penn State Altoona 35-10.
  • The depth of the team was shown tonight as all but three players who entered the game for Chatham recorded a shot. 

In the goal
  • First Year Elayna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) started for the Cougars. She recorded six saves and allowed zero goals.
  • Sophomore Emmory Tardivo (Isabella, Pa./Brownsville Area HS) came in for the second half. A strong Cougar defense only allowed for two shots on frame.
 
Coach's Comments
  • Head Coach Betsy Warren said "Glad to see team Ohio put away some goals today! Great team performance!"
 
Up next
  • The Cougars are back in action September 26th when they take on Carlow at Ellis Field. The first whistle is set for 8 pm. Parking information for Ellis Field will be posted online prior to the game.

Chatham will add two more men's varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse.
