Chatham Hosts Utica In Game 1 of Weekend Series

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa - FEBRUARY 5th, 2016 -- The Chatham University Women's Ice Hockey team welcomed the Pioneers from Utica College to the Alpha Ice Rink this evening for an ECAC-West conference game. The Cougars would have a 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd and final period, but the Pioneers would find a way to score 3 third period goals, and defeat the Cougars 4-3 in game 1 of the weekend series.

The Cougars would strike first tonight when Junior Forward Erika Martin (Fairbanks, Ala. / Team Alaska) would score a first period goal just 7 minutes into the game, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Senior Forward Katrina Hawkins (Powell River, BC / North Island Extreme) would assist on the goal scored by Martin. The Pioneers however would even the score, when they would find the back of the net just 3 minutes later, and tie the game at 1 heading into the second period.

Chatham would regain the lead in the second period when Junior Forward McKenzie Haskins (Anchorage, Ala. / Team Alaska) would score halfway into the period, making the score 2-1. The goal would be assisted by Sophomore Defensemen Kasandra Petersen (Fairbult, Minn. / Minnesota Blaades). Chatham would keep the 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period.

Utica would quickly score 2 goals in the first 3 minutes of play in the third period, to go up 3-2 on the Cougars. Chatham would not be down long, when Junior Forward McKenzie Haskins would score her second goal of the game on a Chatham power play to tie the game up at 3. The power play goal would be assisted once again by Senior Forward Katrina Hawkins. The game would remain tied at 3 until the Pioneers would score their fourth goal of the game, and third of the period with just under 2 minutes left in the game. Chatham could not find a way to tie the game, and would lose 4-3.

Sophomore Goaltender Sydney Isbell (Thunder Bay, ONT / Thunder Bay Queens) would finish the game with 42 saves. The Pioneers would out shoot the Cougars 46-30 in the game. There were two penalties recorded on the night as well, one by each team.

The Chatham University Women's Ice Hockey team will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon, when they play host once again to the Pioneers. Tomorrow will be Senior Recognition day for the Cougars where 5 players will be recognized. Chatham will recognize Forward Marie Soukup, Forward Erika Bronk, Forward Kimberly Miller, Forward Katrina Hawkins, and Defensemen Karlee Kaufman. The puck is set to drop at 3:00 PM at the Alpha Ice Rink in Harmarville.
