Cougars Dominate PAC Tri-Match, Beat Thiel & Saint Vincent

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, Pa – OCTOBER 8th, 2016 – For the first time in program history, the Chatham Cougars swept a PAC tri-match taking down the Thiel Tomcats and the Saint Vincent Bearcats. The Cougars are now ranked fifth in the PAC.
 
The Basics
  • Records: Chatham (4-5 PAC, 7-15 overall) Thiel (2-7 PAC, 8-12) Saint Vincent (3-7 PAC, 10-14)
  • Location: AFC at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa.  
 
GAME 1: Chatham 3 Thiel 1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-20, 29-27)

On the court
  • Collectively, Chatham posted 32 kills, 120 digs and seven blocks.  
 
At the net
  • First Year Justyne Lasher (Kittaning, Pa./Armstrong) earned a season high 22 kills.  
  • Sophomore Katelyn Gonos (Kent, Ohio/Theodore Roosevelt HS) recorded four kills.
  • First Year Belen Brown (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley HS) added three kills.
  • Lasher and First Year Sydney Stevens (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway HS) each earned a service ace.
  • At the net for the Cougars were Sophomore Iman Morgan (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS), First Year Tessa Verner (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg HS) and Sophomore Maggie Fleiner (McKees Rock Pa./Montour HS) who all tabbed three blocks a piece.
 
Assisting the attack
  • First Year Mckenzie Bates (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster HS) finished with 17 assists.
  • First Year Emily Brozenick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carlynton Jr-Sr HS) recorded 12 assists.
 
Defending the court
  • Brown led the backline grabbing an impressive 35 digs.
  • Stevens wasn't far behind with 29 digs.
  • Lasher chipped in 21 digs.   
 
 
GAME 2: Chatham 3 Saint Vincent 2 (25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 25-18, 17-15)

On the court
  • As a team, Chatham earned 28 kills, 84 digs, six blocks and three service aces as they battled the Bearcats through five sets.  
 
At the net
  • Lasher had the team high 17 kills.   
  • Gonos and Brown chipped in four and three kills respectively.
  • Morgan led the team with two service aces. Brozenick added one.
  • Junior Rachel Kolar (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Mifflin Area HS) and Gonos earned three blocks each. Morgan added one.
 
Assisting the attack
  • Bates recorded 16 assists in the five sets.
  • Brozenick finished with nine assists.
  • Gonos added two assists.
 
Defending the court
  • Fleiner led the defense with 26 digs.
  • Brown finished with 19 digs.
  • Lasher added 14 digs for the Cougars.
 
Up next
  • Chatham is back on the court October 11th when they travel to Penn State Greater Allegheny for a nonconference matchup.

Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA is a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and offers nine Division III women's sports and seven men's sports. Chatham will add two more men's varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse.
