Cougars Edge Yellow Jackets, Win in OT 2-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa – OCTOBER 22nd, 2016 – The Chatham Cougars edged the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in overtime by a score of 2-1.
 
The Basics
  • Records: Chatham (5-2 PAC, 10-3-2 overall) Waynesburg (2-5 PAC, 5-10-1 overall)
  • Location: Wiley Stadium at Waynesburg University.      
 
How it happened
  • Chatham outshot Waynesburg 28-7.
  • Waynesburg would get the first goal in the first half on a breakaway.
  • Sophomore Julie Bruening (Madison, Ohio/Madison) would answer back for the Cougars and tie the game with a goal in the 47th minute.
  • Bruening scored just five minutes into overtime on a free kick to give Chatham the victory.
  • First Year Victoria Vernail (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) would lead the Cougars in shots with eight.
  • Bruening would finish with six shots.
  • Junior Megan Sieg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) chipped in five shots.
  • All but two Cougars took a shot in today's match.
  • The aggressive Chatham offense forced six corner kicks.  
 
In the goal
  • First Year Elayna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel HS) was the Chatham goalkeeper for the game. She recorded three saves and just one goal against.
  • The defense played tough only allowing seven shots.    
 
Coach's Comments
  • Head Coach Betsy Warren said "We had a slow start today but I was really pleased with how the team came out in the second half and took control of the game. It was also great to see Julie put the ball away twice. She has been fantastic all season and always comes up big when the team needs her."
 
Up next
  • The Cougars are back on the field when they host the Saint Vincent Bearcats at Ellis Field. First kick is at 8 pm.

Chatham will add two more men's varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse.
