Cougars Down Presidents in Double Overtime

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa – OCTOBER 1st, 2016 – The Chatham Cougars downed the Washington and Jefferson Presidents this afternoon in double overtime with a final score of 2-1. This is the first time in school history that Chatham has beaten W&J. This was a huge win for the Cougars in their first conference game of the season!   
 
The Basics
  • Records: Chatham (1-0 PAC, 6-1-2 overall) W&J (0-1 PAC, 5-3-2 overall)
  • Location: Varsity Field at Chatham University    
 
How it happened
  • The Cougars got off to a strong start when Junior Megan Sieg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic HS) scored the first goal of the game. This is Sieg's fifth goal of the season.
  • The Presidents answered back with a goal of their own not even ten minutes later.
  • The score would stay tied at 1-1 until the double overtime.
  • First Year Kelsey Calamaro (Davie, Fla./The Sagemont School) scored with a header off of a corner kick from Senior Skylar Benjamin (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville HS) just two minutes into double overtime.
  • Chatham outshot W&J 33-26.
  • Leading the Cougars in shots was Benjamin with eight.
  • Sieg finished with six shots, four on frame.
  • All but three Cougars posted a shot in today's match showing the depth of the roster.
  • The Cougars were helped out today by their guest coach Dr. Bayliss. 

In the goal
  • First Year Elayna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) started for the Cougars and would stay there for the entirety of the game. Burdelski made some spectacular saves. She recorded nine saves with one goal against.

Up next
  • The Cougars are back on the field October 5th when they travel to Bethany, W. Va. to take on the Bethany Bison at 4 pm. The Bison are currently 2-6.

Chatham will add women's lacrosse beginning play in 2017-2018. Chatham has added five new men's sports in the 2015-2016 academic year: baseball, basketball, cross country, swimming & diving, track & field. Chatham will add two more men's varsity sports beginning play in 2017-2018; ice hockey and lacrosse.
