Women's Volleyball Falls at La Roche Tournament, First Years Show Promise

Box Score PITTSBURGH, PA - SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 - The Chatham University Women's Volleyball team competed in the La Roche College Tournament this past weekend, matching up against La Roche College, Baldwin Wallace University, Alfred University, and Washington and Jefferson College. Head Coach Marc Eberle's strong group of First Year players are proving to be a great benefit to the Cougars team.

Chatham faced off against La Roche College in the first match of the tournament.  The Cougars fell 0-3, but not without a fight, as the team progressed through each set. La Roche won the first set 13-25, the second 19-25, and the third 20-25. The Cougars' played strong in the final two sets, fueled by First Year Maggie Fleiner's (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour High School) all-around stong play.

In the Cougars' second match on Friday they played Baldwin-Wallace University. The Cougars competed with pride and enthusiasm throughout the match, however would lose 0-3 (9-25, 10-25, 10-25).

The Cougars first match on Saturday was against Alfred University, Chatham lost 0-3 (15-25, 22-25, 14-25). Outside Hitter Maggie Fleiner notched an impressive 8 kills, 2 aces, 14 digs, and 3 assists. Fleiner's fellow First Year's, Katelyn Gonos (Kent, OH/Theodore Roosevelt High School), Abbey Little (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock Area High School), and Emily Brozenick (Pittsburgh, PA/Carlynton Jr.-Sr. High School), all chipped in with fundamental and aggressive play; Gonos finished with 8 kills, Little with 9 digs, and Brozenick with a fantastic 16 assists.

The Cougars would play PAC opponent Washington & Jefferson College in their final match of the tournament. The Presidents' would defeat the Cougars, 11-25, 11-25, and 12-25. Junior Heather McIntyre (Ashburn, VA./Broad Run High School) looked to facilitate consistent play, recording 4 kills and 9 digs, while First Years Maggie Fleiner and Abbey Little added support; Fleiner with 3 kills and 7 digs and Little with 14 digs.

The Cougars' battled with toughness throughout the weekend. The addition of Chatham's six First Year players and the core group from the seasons passed, give the Cougars hope to progress as the season heats up.
