Cougars Win 13-2 Over Salem International in Season Opener

Box Score PITTSBURGH, PA - SEPTEMBER 1, 2015 - The Chatham Cougars Women's Soccer team kicked off their season versus the visiting Salem International University Tigers this afternoon in a lop-sided 13-2 non-conference victory at Varsity Field. Fueled by scoring from eight different Cougar players and a hat trick by Forward Julie Bruening (Madison,OH/Madison), this win marks the first of the season for Head Coach Betsy Warren and her team.

The Cougars' looked fluent and aggressive against Salem International University this afternoon. Freshman Julie Bruening, a Forward for the Cougars, led the team in scoring with three stellar goals, two of which came in the first half of play, eclipsing Salem International's team scoring for the game. Bruening's strong offense and powerful shots were complimented by the finesse of Chatham's Kassianna Politis (McMurray, PA/Peter's Township), whom assisted on three of the 13 goals scored by the Cougars, two of which were scored by Politis herself.

Chatham's great spacing and constant communication on the field helped solidify the victory for the Cougars, creating opportunities for eight players to record goals. Along with Bruening and Politis' aggressive offense, Junior Skylar Benjamin (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) and Sophomore Megan Sieg (Pittsburgh, PA/Serra Catholic) notched two goals a piece in the win, as well as goals from Auralia Henderson (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), Sarah Jugovic (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), Katelyn Sieg (Pittsburgh, PA/Serra Catholic), and Courtney Sampson (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle).

The Cougars kept possession for most of the game, forcing the ball into Salem International territory and sending a barrage of shots towards the goal. Salem International was hard-pressed to find any solution in hindering the Cougars' strong play as Salem International Goalkeeper, Bre'Ana Felix, faced a daunting 52 shots from Chatham. The Cougars' defense forced turnovers and contained the Tigers on offense at midfield for the majority of the game.

The Cougars will welcome Penn State Greater Allegheny in a non-conference game at Varsity Field this upcoming Saturday at 1 P.M.
