Box Score PITTSBURGH, PA – After being tied at halftime, Thiel College outscored Chatham 45-28 in the second half to earn an 82-65 victory on Wednesday night. Chatham falls to 3-21 overall and 2-15 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Tomcats improve to 7-17 overall (6-11 PAC).
Four Chatham players scored in double figures, led by first-year guard
Rachel McClain (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) who tallied 16.
Becky Rowe (So., Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) drained three three-pointers en route to 13 points.
Marguerite Sargent (Sr., Washington, PA/Washington) scored 11 and
Carly Zelenak (Jr., Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) added 10.
Sargent led Chatham with four steals while
Julianne Speeney (Sr., Connellsville, PA/Geibel Catholic) dished out a team high five assists.
For Thiel, Kelly Barzak had a stellar all-around game, scoring 30 points on 12-18 shooting and grabbing 16 rebounds. She also blocked three shots. Kelly Muffley scored 19 and Jaclyn Watkins tallied 11.
After four ties in the first seven minutes of the game, Chatham went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 21-15 following a McClain trey with just over ten minutes on the clock. That lead extended to eight when Sargent stole an errant Thiel pass and converted the fast break layup with 5:30 to play in the half. Thiel responded, though, with an 11-3 run to close the half to tie the game at halftime, 37-37.
Thiel's momentum carried over into the second half, where they began the half on a 15-4 run to take a 52-41 lead. With just under seven minutes to play, the Tomcats capped a 14-2 run to pull ahead by 21.
Thiel out-rebounded Chatham 49-27 in the game. The Tomcats were efficient on offense, connecting at a 30-59 (50.8%) clip from the floor and shooting 17-21 (81.0%) from the free throw line. Both teams scored well in the paint, as Thiel tallied 45 points in the key, while Chatham scored 30 of their 65 points in the paint.
Chatham will wrap-up the 2012-2013 season on Saturday, February 16 when they travel to PAC foe Waynesburg University for a 1:30pm tip-off.
