Chatham Falls to Grove City 60-43

Box Score PITTSBURGH, PA - Rachel McClain (Fy., Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the Chatham University basketball team suffered a 60-43 loss to visiting Grove City College on Wednesday. The Cougars fall to 1-10 (1-4 Presidents' Athletic Conference) with the loss. GCC improves to 4-5 (3-2 PAC).

Anna Shashura (Fy., Fredericktown, PA/Bethlehem Center) tallied 11 points for Chatham. Carly Zelenak (Jr., Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Elizabeth Lewis (Jr., Marysville, OH/Marysville) dished out four assists.

For the Wolverines, Kathryn Erbelding led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Leah Gibson added 13 and Ausinette Rodriguez also recorded nine rebounds.

A McClain three pointer kept Chatham in the game early, trailing just 6-4 five minutes into the contest. An 11-5 GCC run, though, gave the visitors a 17-9 lead with ten minutes to play. A layup by Shashura at the 5:52 mark brought the Cougars back within five at 19-14, but Grove City ended the half on a 10-5 spurt to go into halftime leading 29-19.

Chatham scored five of the first seven points of the second half to bring the score to 31-24 with 17:41 remaining in the game. The Wolverines sealed control, however, with a 19-4 run over a 5:14 span to take a 50-28 advantage midway through the half. Chatham countered with a 10-2 run of their own to cut the deficit to 14, but scored just five points in the final seven minutes of play.

Grove City out-rebounded Chatham 63-24, including pulling down 31 offensive rebounds. The Wolverines did not make a three pointer, but shot 6-6 from the free throw line. Chatham drained six threes and committed 21 turnovers. Chatham forced 23 miscues from Grove City.

The Cougars return to action tomorrow, January 3, when they host Penn State-Altoona. Tip-off in the AFC is set for 7:00pm.
